Lighting upgrade electrician services

Switching to LEDs will help you reduce your energy consumption. This means you can expect to see long-term cost savings on your power bills after you replace your lights. Our team of electricians makes the whole process really easy from making sure the roofing is suitable, doing an inspection of the power supply at the property, the switchboard & wiring.

You will get plenty of enjoyment from using LED lighting because they have very little maintenance, last longer & even reduce the amount of heat built up inside the property, especially on hot days.

Replacing an LED light is not like changing a lightbulb – don’t be tempted to take on repairs or installations by yourself. Dealing with electrical wiring in your roof can be dangerous, which is why you need to leave electrical jobs to the professionals.

Our team includes electricians that can carry out a wide range of electrical work to install or replace lighting for new home builds, existing houses, units, apartments. townhouses, businesses or commercial properties. Each electrician is licensed, experienced and can handle a wide range of electrical related tasks including;

  • Removing old lighting systems.
  • Setting up new lighting placement points & connections.
  • Replacing or installing new light switches.
  • Adjusting switchboards to handle more lighting capacity

Should you get an electrician to install LED lighting?

Our electricians have seen first hand how much people can save on their power bills, we compare the switchboard metre before & after installing LED lighting & can instantly see the lower power usage. If you are still using the older style halogen or fluorescent tube lights then you are simply paying too much for your electricity (unless you are fully powered by solar of course)

Quite simply thousands of Sydney home owners are replacing their halogen, incandescent and compact fluorescent lights because they are outdated and inefficient, consuming up to 90% more electricity than energy efficient LED lights. Halogen downlights use inefficient and outdated lighting technology, which costs more to run every time you turn the light on. That’s why thousands of Australians are replacing them with energy efficient LED lights.

The costs saving estimates are an average home with 28 LED lights can save $866 per year while changing 20 halogen downlights to LED downlights, you can save up to $210 a year on energy costs according to Energy Australia with many people reporting up to 80% in energy savings can be made when replacing your halogen downlights to the energy efficient L.E.D downlights.

LED downlights cost more than other lighting systems available in Sydney, but the reduction in electricity use is substantial. The difference is rapidly paid off through your power bill savings, often in as little as a year’s time. Combine that with a much longer life and less drop off in intensity and you are clearly better off with an LED downlight installation.

Many people also forget about the replacement costs, LEDs can have a lifespan of 30,000 to 50,000 hours compared to your halogen downlights at just 1000 hours.

What lighting products can an electrician install?

LED lighting technology has evolved very quickly in the last ten years. Our electricians are constantly getting training and product updates from the manufacturers to make sure we can install any product quickly & efficiently for you. Typically an LED light can have a lifespan of many years, so products quote up to twenty five years of use and even as they get older they will still put out around 70% of their original brightness.

There are lots of products available that can suit residential or commercial use with either fixed or dimmable products and even a choice of lumens (Measures how much light is emitted. The more lumens, the more light), kelvin selections (the temperature of the light emitted, or in other words the colour of the light. In commercial and residential environments, it generally varies from cool white (6000k), to neutral (4500k) to warm white (3000k) and of course fitting styles.

We can install any type of LED light either indoors or outdoors.

An electrician with great reviews

We can write a million words on our website, but finding a local electrician with great reviews is probably more important and here are a few samples with more on our online profiles.

We have recently used the services of Hi-Quality Electrical for our shop refit re-wiring.

We would rate the service 5 stars, nothing was too much trouble and the team was very accommodating.

We would not hesitate to use Clayton, Travis and his electrician team again for any future work.

We highly recommend them.

Just a shout out to Hi-Quality Electrical and the service their electricians provide.

We just had them out to inspect and quote for smoke detector installation and they completed this service where they test all electrical components of the house for peace of mind.

Wish we knew about their electrical inspection service prior to purchasing as we could have negotiated the buying price

Thank you so much for organising the sensor light installation with your electrician.

As I mentioned to you, this was a fairly urgent job for me as it was a matter of security due to some incidents I was experiencing. Your understanding of the situation and the urgency behind it was reassuring.

I also wanted to mention the electrician who did the job. He was so polite and very helpful and patient, answering all my questions and showing me how to adjust the light if necessary. I would appreciate if you would pass my feedback onto him.

I will certainly be passing on the recommendation of Hi Quality Electrical to others.

Frequently asked questions about our Lighting upgrades service

As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to install LED downlights 1m away from each wall. The space between each led downlight should be between 1.2m-1.5m, taking into consideration the size of your room and how much light is required in each.

Yes. LED downlights are definitely the better choice. The reason is that they’re more cost effective, being cheaper to run, and they last much longer than halogen, with a lifespan of around 10 years. LED lights also don’t run hot. When you handle halogen globes that may have just blown, they’re incredibly hot. You won’t get that with an LED. This also means you can safely insulate around them without any fear of them causing fires.

If you’re still not convinced, don’t worry, the Federal Government has made the decision for you. From September 2020 the halogen light was made unavailable to purchase, looking towards a more economical future for all Australians.

LED downlights are a recessed ceiling light fixture that directs light down in the form of a narrow beam. They are one of the most popular lighting sources used in the home today and help improve the light quality in areas where they are installed. LED downlights have a metal or plastic frame housing consisting of a microchip to emit the light, a transformer that will step down the voltage from 240v to 24/12v, and a 10amp plug-top to insert into your plug-base.

One of the most important considerations when you’re thinking of having LED downlights installed is space. The goal is to have light washing over you in an even spread, rather than one central location. An average LED downlight puts out around 800 lumens, and it is recommended to be placed 1 metre from the wall, and include spacing of around 1.2-1.5 metres between each downlight in the ceiling.

While you can also purchase specific spotlights, an LED downlight can also be installed in a way that will highlight anything you want to show off, whether it’s a piece of art or family heirloom.

In the mid 2000’s, the Building Code of Australia was changed to include more stringent energy efficiency requirements for hard-wired lighting. All homes must now comply with wattage allowances of;

5 watts per square metre inside the home.

4 watts per square metre on the exterior of the home such as verandas, alfrescos or balconies.

3 watts per square metre for garages.

All three of these areas are included in the total wattage allowance. Wattage does not have to be spread evenly between rooms in the house. As long as your total wattage used does not exceed your allowance, you’re in compliance with the law. This gives homeowners and builders a great deal of flexibility in terms of how they light their homes. Areas needing more lighting than others can get it as long as the extra watts are offset by lower watts somewhere else in the home.

Even though home wattage is capped, homeowners can still get the illumination they need without going over their limit by using LED lighting. Since LED lights use much less energy than standard bulbs, homeowners can realise great savings in terms of energy costs and wattage without sacrificing brightness. For example, an old 60W bulb can be replaced with LED lighting that may only use 11W of electricity. That saves you 49W against your total wattage allowance.

It’s important to understand that the wattage that is counted towards your total allotment isn’t based on how much your fitting can handle, it’s based on how much you actually use. So, even though your recessed lights can handle 60W, if you are only using 11W LED downlights, the 11W is counted towards your total home wattage, not the 60W.

The BCA lighting regulations give homeowners and builders a chance to create energy efficient homes from the start. But even if you’re not renovating, switching to LED lights is a smart move that’s good for your budget and the environment.

LED downlights are worth investing in, simple as that. You can save money on your electricity bills, make your home look more modern & create a better spread of light around any room in your home.

They look better – compared to oyster lights or even fluorescent tube light installations, LED look much better, sophisticated even, when you compare them to older style lighting types.

Reduced Fire Risk – The heat produced by a halogen globe can reach up to 200c making it too hot to even touch. When switching a halogen globe on, it instantly produces only 20% of light with the other 80% is energy that turns into heat. That heat then builds up in the roof and if something was to come in contact with it, not only is it wasteful but they could potentially cause a fire. It is why it is advised to have protective covers over lights in the ceiling. Although LED downlights don’t have the same issues.

Environmentally Friendly – L.E.D downlights do not contain any mercury or any other harmful gases, but more importantly they use less electricity compared to other types of lights.

Any downlight can be replaced with LEDs. The amount of work involved will depend on the space in your roof cavity, how many they are and the types of lights that are getting removed and replaced. Old halogens, oyster lights with bulbs or any other type of ceiling light can be removed by an electrician and replaced with something new.
